Session Description
Summary: The Certified Modeling and Simulation Profession (CMSP) certification program has been reinvented and reintroduced to the M&S community as CMSP 3.0. The certification’s application process has been streamlined, the examination updated, and an approach to ensure readily available reference material developed, amongst many other additional improvements. This proposal is to conduct a CMSP 3.0 Professional Development Workshop. This four-hour session will describe the requirements needed to achieve this valuable certification. It will cover the updated application and examination processes including education, work experience, and reference requirements for the Intern, Apprentice, Practitioner, and Master Levels; application processes; how the exam is administered and scored; and the role of continuing education in certificate renewal. It will also provide an overview of the fundamental M&S topics covered in the exams and include several relevant simulation videos.
Engaging Activities: This year's CMSP PDW will now include four game-show style exercises. The first, The Type is Right, modeled after CBS’ The Price is Right, displays to the audience a quick look at the picture of a type of M&S system, that needs to be identified, an answer is provided - and then the answer is discussed. The second is a Jeopardy style game, with categories and answers/questions on salient topics, and chocolate coin prizes. Third and finally, new in 2024, is an anagram acronym crossword puzzle, where a partially completed crossword puzzle of acronyms is displayed, and attendees work to fill in the blanks, with the prize of an M&S Monograph going to the most successful contestant.
Provided by: The PDW will be led by Ivar Oswalt - a Senior M&S Expert who is CMSP Certified, and has been an integral part of its reinvention, and that has provided previous CMSP PDWs.
Intended audience and relevance to I/ITSEC
A Certified Modeling and Simulation Professional (CMSP) designation establishes an individual's knowledge and currency in modeling and simulation (M&S) techniques, processes, programs, and activities. It is pertinent to all M&S disciplines, application areas, and communities and is relevant to all I/ITSEC attendees as the only broad-based M&S professional certification. Whether designing a simulator, writing display software, developing hardware, developing new and innovative methodologies, using simulation in support of wargaming, or in hundreds of other related areas, CMSP shows proficiency and distinction. From novice M&S users to seasoned master-level professionals, learning how to become more qualified and recognized in this rapidly growing field is of increasing interest. This is especially true with the release of CMSP 3.0, which has improved to be even more useful and relevant and about which attendees will want to learn more.
Short statement of benefits participants will gain
Participants will learn about the importance of certification, the types of modeling and simulation certifications available, and particulars about CMSP; its value, the qualifications and process needed to achieve it, and first-hand strategies to successfully complete the examination. They will gain a more thorough understanding of modeling and simulation; its definitions, uses, development methodologies, measurement approaches, future technological initiatives (like artificial intelligence and quantum computing), and similar. Attendees will meet others in the M&S profession, establishing valuable relationships, while they learn about new and innovative application areas and implementations. Finally, they will participate in fun and engaging game-show style exercises to instill the concepts discussed.
