Gait disabilities are highly prevalent in veteran populations and include a wide range of symptoms, often caused by trauma or disease. Recent experimental techniques suggests that rapid advancement of Augmented Reality (AR) and hybrid virtual reality (VR) technologies have the potential for simulation of sensorimotor training in gait rehabilitation. This paper describes the development of a game based AR system to support the rehabilitation of lower limb amputees. The AR system was built was designed to be a standalone wearable system that can be used outside of a clinical setting. Initial trials were held at the Providence Veteran Administration Medical Centers Gait and Motion Analysis Laboratory and the AR system was identified as a novel tool that can be used for gait rehabilitation in the clinic and the home.
