Abstract:

The Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft (FARA) Program Management Office, in collaboration with the Program Executive Office (PEO) Aviation, has conducted an extensive study to determine the optimal levels of simulation fidelity required for Army aviation training. While initially focused on the FARA program, the findings of this research are poised to benefit the entire fleet of Army aviation platforms. By ensuring military preparedness aligns with the complex demands of modern warfare and rapid technological advancements, this study aims to enhance the effectiveness of training programs across the board.

Key insights from this study challenge conventional wisdom in the field of military simulation and training. Notably, the analysis suggests that seat-based motion cueing (vibration) may be as effective as full-motion simulators for a wide range of training tasks, potentially offering more cost-effective solutions. Additionally, the research reveals that fidelity and motion in training devices can be assessed independently, allowing for a more nuanced understanding of their individual and combined impacts on training outcomes.

The study highlights the need for established requirements for deployable training modes in simulation devices, which are crucial for enhancing training efficiency in non-combat scenarios. There is also a pressing need to develop requirements for the collection and analysis of data from training devices, focusing on evaluating the statistical significance of training impacts between simulated and aircraft training.

This analysis provides valuable insights for the development of effective, efficient, and future-proof training solutions for the aviation industry. It offers a comprehensive understanding of simulation fidelity requirements across different training echelons, from institutional setups to operational units in the field. The findings of this study have significant implications for the future of aviation training and simulation, offering a path toward more cost-effective and impactful training methodologies across the entire industry.
